The Famous is proud to be opening for Red Meat at their CD release show for the brand spanking new recording, “Live at the World’s Smallest Honky Tonk.”

Carrying on the strong West Coast tradition of creating authentic country and western music with a sharp edge, Red Meat helps keep honky tonk music fresh and alive in the Bay Area.

The true Bob Seger stylings of Total B.S. hit the stage just after The Famous.

Friday – 8/27 – at 8:30 p.m.
The Famous w/ Red Meat and Total B.S.
Café Du Nord – 2170 Market St., SF

The Famous at 9:30 sharp – $15 – 21+

So you know, trombonist Charlie Wilson is going to do his darndest to make the scene and we hope you can to.

Tickets are available at the Café Du Nord online box office:
http://www.cafedunord.com/

As a preview to the show… the infamous Pirate Cat Radio is hosting The Famous for a live radio show in the heart of the Mission.

‘The Cat’ will take on a whole new meaning for those in the know.

This Saturday (8/21) just after 5 p.m. tune into 87.9 FM for the live in-studio performance… or if you’re outside San Francisco, listen online:

http://www.piratecatradio.com/listen-live

Just like the band Red Meat… Pirate Cat Radio was also born in the SF Mission District and we couldn’t be more thrilled to join them to spread the word of The Famous on the air and online.

I sure hope you have that band that you saw first before anyone else you know. It’s a cool part of being a music fan. For me, that’s The Toadies.

The first time I saw them perform was at Dave’s Art Pawn, a Deep Ellum after-hours spot in Dallas. This was when they were making demo tapes (on cassette) — I still have one somewhere titled ‘I Hope You Die.’

The sound was blistering and the emotions were raw at their early live shows. Years later they released their first major album ‘Rubberneck,’ which had radio hits like ‘Possum Kingdom,’ and other unforgettable songs such as ‘I Come From the Water.’

They were the first band I’d ever watched rise to stardom from scratch. There was a sense of pride in that for most who caught their first shows in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area clubs. Yet, when it came time for the follow-up album, their label Interscope apparently took a listen and shelved it. That’s near death for a band that lives on touring. Perhaps it didn’t sound enough like Bush? — the British band… not one of the father/son U.S. Presidents.

I’ve always thought of The Toadies as the Texas Pixies, a killer live band with a clever edge, not the commercial radio construction the label helped feed and then starved.

Many years later, what became their second album for Interscope, ‘Hell Below/Stars Above,’ was nearly a decade removed from their debut. It always left me wondering what the label had buried. Now we get a chance to find out.

Part of The Toadies’ tour bringing them to San Francisco is to promote the re-recorded, first time release of that hidden album, ‘Feeler.’

The first chance to get a copy is on this tour and The Famous couldn’t be more proud to be on the bill at Bottom of the Hill this Sunday.

Since our drummer Chris is out of pocket, Geoff Arcuri is playing drums with us. He played in the Sonoma punk band Diesel Boy with our bassist G.D. for years on the road. That rhythm section re-united, and joined by The Famous’ guitar twang is truly ‘a shot of Classic Country with a Punk Rock chaser.’

Geoff is with us for two shows — Sunday, July 25th at Bottom of the Hill, when we open for The Toadies’ and Silver Lake’s ‘Dead Country.’ We play early, right at 9 p.m.

http://www.stubmatic.com/bottomofthehill/event/5034

Plus, a free show in Santa Rosa the night before — Saturday, July 24th — when we return to the Russian River Brewing Company with a special Pliny the Elder song in tow.

See you soon,
–Laurence and The Famous

If you haven’t been to The New Parish, check it out sometime soon. Smerv and crew run a great sounding room that is very welcoming. Also, the connected restaurant Hibiscus serves up some mean fried chicken and greens.

Next up on The Famous’ Sunday Night Music Club schedule… another must-see show:

July 25th at Bottom of the Hill we open the show for Texas music legends ‘The Toadies’ and Silver Lake’s ‘Dead Country.’

Much more to come on this. We are very excited. I’ll be packed. For advance tickets:

Fresh off a tour of the Sacramento Delta (more on that below)… it’s now time for The Famous to hit the airwaves and live audio streams of KZSU radio.

This Wednesday, June 16 at 9 p.m. KZSU brings The Famous to the basement of Memorial Auditorium at Stanford University for their long-standing Wednesday Night Live show.

Listen to KZSU either on 90.1 FM in the Bay Area or live streaming:

http://kzsulive.stanford.edu/

From 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., a hour of power on the Farm’s 500 watt music leader.

It’s a long standing Bay Area tradition playing WNL, which has hosted the likes of Red Meat, Swingin’ Utters, Brian Jonestown Massacre and many others in recent years.

Also, much thanks is due to the folks who make up the very cool Sacramento music scene centered around the great sounding room at Old Ironsides. Jerry Perry is one of the coolest and most dedicated promoters we’ve had the pleasure to work with on shows outside San Francisco.

We can’t wait to get the very awesome band we opened for at Old Ironsides Friday, The Nickel Slots, to play with us again.

The best is yet to come with shows featuring both bands in the coming months.

Others in the scene, like Shelli Sherwood, who took these cool photos, make it a great place to play. Also, we had a great time with Gen 11 and The RevTones at Mutiny the following night and look forward to more shows with them in the near future as well.

Sunday, June 20 is not just Father’s Day but also a big show at Thee Parkside as The Famous play in support of Drag the River. So until then, tune us in on Wednesday Night Live and we’ll see you soon.

Thanks to all who joined us at the ballpark for the first ever SF Giants Brewfest. We had a blast and made a ton of new Friends of The Famous.

Also, look at the box score and you can’t deny the results… The Famous play an event at AT&T Park and the Giants put up their highest run total of the season in a 12-1 toasting of the Diamondbacks. Coincidence? We think not… (yet, the arrival of Buster Posey didn’t hurt either)

So what’s next? The Famous take the show on the road and head just a shade north for two nights straight. Mark your calendars and tell your out-of-town friends about Friday, June 11 and Saturday, June 12.

The Famous play Sacramento’s Old Ironsides for the first time ever on Friday, June 11 in support of Sac’s own and very entertaining ‘The Nickel Slots.’

Alive and Kicking promoter Jerry Perry is the king of the Sacramento scene and is hosting us for what will be a great Friday night in our state capital — furloughs be damned.

The next night, Saturday, June 12, The Famous return to Mutiny in Antioch for a Hot Rod rally with ‘The RevTones’ and ‘Gen 11.’

June is a big month for The Famous and will also include a few radio spots and a big show on Father’s Day in SF opening for ‘Drag the River’ at Thee Parkside on June 20.

Hope to see you at one of the upcoming shows and maybe we’ll see you sooner than later at Old Ironsides in Sacramento. Ay, tear her tattered ensign down!
